Mercy Ships Cameroon is helping to eradicate diseases of poverty
“I applaud the Mercy Ships in their efforts of transformational development as they make a lasting difference in a world of need. Mercy Ships has committed themselves to the vision of an African renaissance in their vision of bringing hope and healing to the continent of Africa… I salute the vision and mission of Mercy Ships and ask that you join me in supporting their noble work and contribute to make this world a better place.” ~ Nelson Mandela
Australian volunteers have been working tirelessly to deliver nearly 3,000 life-changing surgeries on board the Africa Mercy hospital ship since it arrived in Cameroon in August 2017.
It is estimated that 48 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. Poverty in Cameroon is largely a rural phenomenon with an estimated 55 percent of the country’s poor living in rural areas with few roads connecting urban centers to rural areas . Mercy Ships has shown that this lack of transportation, or the inability to pay for it, contributes substantially to people’s inability to access surgery when they need it.
In order to tackle this problem and access patients in the more remote areas of Cameroon, Mercy Ships developed a screening app which greatly increased their ability to identify and reach poorer, more isolated patients. Using the App, Mercy Ships has identified thousands of people in rural areas of Cameroon in need of lifesaving healthcare.
During their time in Cameroon, Mercy Ships plans to provide the more than 11,000 people identified with free lifesaving medical and dental surgeries. The Mercy Ships Cameroon mission will train and mentor more than 700 local health professionals, contributing to continued, improved healthcare in the region long after the Africa Mercy has sailed on to the next port.
Mercy Ships is truly helping to eradicate diseases of poverty and they need your help to raise awareness and funds to support their continued work in Africa.
The Mercy May campaign aims to raise enough funds to deliver 1,500 of the life-changing surgeries identified for the Mercy Ships Cameroon mission.
“Mercy May is a great way for people to share the Mercy Ships story with their friends and help save lives in Africa at the same time. Your involvement with Mercy May, no matter how big or small, will make a vital difference.” ~ Australian volunteer nurse Karen Binns
